A new species of trapdoor spider has been discovered in Queensland, Australia by researchers from the Queensland Museum.
The spider, called Euoplos dignitas, is larger than most trapdoor spiders, with females growing up to 5cm in length and living for over 20 years.
The spider's habitat has been heavily impacted by land clearing, putting it at risk of becoming an endangered species.
The species was found during a three-day search in May 2021, with only one population found along a roadside verge.
Euoplos dignitas means diversity or greatness in Latin, reflecting the impressive size and nature of the spider.
